The Resurrection of Jesus

There are different approaches to worship at Easter. Some have sunrise services. Now how about if we added this twist. On Easter morning people run to the service as fast as they can from over two miles away and attend the worship out of breath. That is what happened that resurrection morning that we are remembering. Peter running fast but John passed him.

John stopped and looked and Peter went in. Only the grave clothes there. He is not here! He is risen!

The Bible paints a clear picture of man’s ruin in sin and God’s perfect remedy in Christ.

“Romans have the most complete diagnoses of the plague of man’s sin, the most glorious setting forth of remedy in Christ.” Says Donald Barnhouse about Romans

No wonder Romans at the beginning sets forth the truth of the resurrection of Jesus. It is Foundational to the Christian faith.  There is Good news, justification by faith.

Romans 1:3-4 This Good News is about his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In his human nature he was a descendant of David. in his spiritual, holy nature he was declared the Son of God. This was shown in a powerful way when he came back to life.

Easter Time: Account of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus was placed in a tomb of Friday: Jesus dead

The tomb was empty Sunday morning: Jesus Alive

Jesus accomplished his work on the cross- the most agonizing moments imaginable- culminated in the resurrection.

Jesus only remained on the cross a few hours- but his resurrection to life has lasted more than 2,000 years and will stretch into eternity. Jesus arose from the dead and he lives.

Frank Morrison wrote Who Moved the Stone. His purpose was to disprove the resurrection. It was a searching study. In the end he determined the resurrection of Jesus an undeniable historical fact. It really happened.

Resurrection of Jesus: Proof to the World

Vs 4 Jesus was declared with power to be the Son of God with the resurrection.

The moment Jesus died there was an earthquake. The temple vial was torn in two. The earth shook. There were rocks split open. Tombs broke open and bodies were raised.

When the centurion guards at the cross saw this they proclaimed, “Surely He was the Son of God.”

The resurrection of Jesus sent a new message; Surely Jesus is the Son of God.” He is alive.

The resurrection of declares Jesus to be the Son of God with power. It was a real resurrection following his real death.

Critics have denied both, that Jesus died and that Jesus resurrected.

I had clipped a newspaper article called “South African man raised from the “dead.”

William Mdletshe was declared dead after a traffic accident. He spent two days in a metal box and his cries alerted mortuary workers. This article came from a mainstream newspaper not a sensationalism paper. It did say though his fiancé thought he was a zombie.

Could it be as a few critics claim that Jesus was placed in the Tomb and was still alive? Was it like the South African man who was not really dead and all and was revived?

It was researching these types of questions that led Frank Morrison to change from writing a book refuting the resurrection to writing a book establishing the historical reliability of the resurrection. Only until recent times did anybody ever even put forth such an idea that Jesus did not really die.

Consider what Jesus endured and what is involved in being crucified on a cross. There was the Roman scourging. Jesus was stripped, beaten with straps of leather with metal barbs. There were nails that pierced his hands and feet and nailed to hang on the cross. After he was known to be dead a spear was driven into him.

Pilate, the soldiers Joseph of Aramithea and Nicodemus all determined Jesus was dead. Not only was he clearly dead but think what it means if he simply resuscitated and wiggled out of all the grave clothes wrapped up like a mummy. He folded his burial cloth up and laid it separate? He rolled away the stones that takes several men to move the granite stone? The women did not know how the stone would be moved, they were not strong enough.

Then for Jesus to get past the Roman guard. If those soldiers fell asleep it was punishable by death. So he either snuck past them or overpowered them?   Then I suppose the angel was confused who said, “Jesus is not here, he has risen just as he said?”

The tomb was heavily guarded because no one wanted to let the disciples have a chance to steal his body. Jesus died, was buried and raised again!

Over the next forty days following the resurrection Jesus appeared alive in bodily form to various groups, to as many as 500 at one time.

Jesus died and was raised. Jesus resurrection declares Jesus is the Son of God with power!

The Resurrection of Jesus can change your life.

The first sermon preached after the resurrection and Jesus departed to heaven was preached by Peter. The resurrection of Jesus was central to that sermon. Peter had witnessed this and he preached with conviction that Jesus has risen. There were 3,000 that gave their lives to Jesus that sermon.

Peter who denied Jesus now boldly proclaims Christ. He was witness of the resurrection. Peter walked into that empty tomb and he saw and believed. He was no longer weeping bitterly about denying Christ. He was transformed by the resurrection and preaching boldly in the power of the Holy Spirit.

We serve not a dead Jesus, but a risen savior. The resurrection has the power to transform your life. Won’t you give your life to Jesus Christ?
