Prepare for revival

To get a fire started you need some paper, dry kindling wood and a flame. Once you get the flame started you must take care to make sure the flame gets air. You may blow into the flame to get the fire to ignite. You also protect the small flame from too much wind that could blow it out. But once it catches fire you could throw just about anything on it and it would burn.

Preparing for revival is a little like that. We must nurture the spiritual revival flames. You have some prepared people, sparks of the Word of God, fan the flame with prayer and it catches and blazes into a full scale revival. Just about anything can happen then.

There will be people coming to Christ, brokenness, weeping reconciliation, blessing and renewal. When revival pours out it cannot be contained. People who now have a dry routine faith will have a sweet fellowship with the Lord. There will be the presence of God. Oh Lord send a revival!

We need a genuine spiritual revival. Read 1 Peter 1:13-22

1 Peter 1:13-22

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.[

The first word in this passage is therefore. It refers to how salvation should affect our lives. Your faith should affect every area of your life, your mind, your soul and your heart.

Prepare your mind for revival.  1 Peter 1:13-16

Gird your mind for action. Men wore long robes and when they really got down to business they would tuck the robe under their belt, girding up their loins. In the Exodus from Egypt God told his people to gird up your loins? Jesus girded himself in this way went he washed the disciples feet. The meaning is to prepare your mind for action.

In sports there is a lot of emphasis on mental preparation. How do you prepare mentally for a revival? Discipline your thoughts. One way to think of your mind is like a satellite television station. Every imaginable thought is out there. What are you tuning in to? Is it praise to God or worldly garbage?

Your salvation should result in spiritually disciplined thoughts. You prepare for revival when your thoughts are on the eternal. Peter says to set your hope completely on the grace to be brought at the coming of Jesus Christ.

You can change the channel of your mind to Christ honoring thoughts. Just like you don’t have to watch bad TV channels. Change the channel in your mind to what honors God. Gird up your mind. Romans 8 don’t set your mind on what the flesh desires. The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.

Thoughts are the root. Don’t be conformed to your former lusts. Don’t have anything to do with the bad habits that dominated you before you were a Christian. Be holy because God is holy. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Set your mind upon Jesus. Let your actions glorify Jesus.

There is action called for. Gird up your mind. Keep a sober spirit. Fix your hope. Do you want revival? Spiritual discipline of your thoughts are crucial in getting ready.

Prepare your Soul for Revival 1 Peter 1:17-21

Peter refers to God as Father, speaking our relationship with God. But Peter also reminds us that God is judge. God judges each man’s works impartially. Peter has given a great emphasis on Christian security, but yet live in reverent fear. God does hold you accountable for your deeds.

We need a sense of awe. Fear and reverence of God are part of our soul food, our spiritual nourishment. An absence of reverent fear is evidence you need revival. Spiritual values are foremost. God did not ransom you from the slave block of sin with money like people buy and sell human beings, but you were ransomed with something more costly, the blood of Christ.

Conduct yourselves remembering your salvation. Live in fear and reverence. When we lose fear of God it is a spiritual tragedy. Awa and reverent fear of God is a common element in great revivals. There is a fear of displeasing God and a sense of unworthiness before God. Jonathan Edwards preached Sinners in the hands of an Angry God sparking the first great awakening.

People were full of love or joy yet so full of distress. People felt as though the day of judgement had come.

Isaiah came before God he saw his sinful condition and said, “woe is me, I am undone a man of unclean lips”.

A broken and contrite heart O God you will not despise. In reverent fear we see our sin before God and we are horrified. Prepare your soul. Your spiritual sensitivity is a big factor in revival.

Prepare you Heart for revival

Revival affects our relationship to God, but also to one another. Peter talks about how as our salvation affects us it should give us a love for the unlovely. Jesus goes so far as to say, by this will all men know that you are my disciples that you love one another. Do you love people with a pure heart fervently? Without love you are nothing.

We are called on to love one another. True revival cannot neglect the matter of the heart. How is your Mind? How is your Soul? How is your heart?

The first step to getting right is your faith in Christ. But God has so much more in mind for you. Give your whole mind, soul and heart to Christ. Prepare yourself for spiritual revival.
